Hillary's Mutnemom!

It's the same show that they broadcast. They better hope it doesn't catch on too rapidly--after all, what if everyone got their news this way? Wouldn't NBC be in trouble? It's not that I wouldn't pay money for their product. But they've been protected by their position as holder of scarce broadcast frequencies. Once the Nightly News is just another Webcast, competition will be fierce--barriers to entry in the Webcasting business, it seems, are close to zero. There will be 50 or 500 competing Webcasts, not two. Advantage: Pajamas! I suppose I'm the last guy to have figured this out. ... P.S.: Does this mean Katie Couric's salary will go down or up? Someone who can increase market share in a competitive industry, after all, might be all the more precious. ... 8:24 P.M.

Juan Cole writes:

The only way in which these elections may lead to a US withdrawal is that they will ensconce parliamentarians who want the US out on a short timetable.

If They Build It ...

Angelos said that the current stadium's location, 15 miles away from Florida Atlantic's campus in Fort Lauderdale, deters students from attending games. Angelos added that while the university met the National Collegiate Athletic Association's requirement last year that Division I-A teams sell at least 15,000 tickets per game, that task will be much easier with a bigger, better stadium because it can sell corporate and bulk tickets to drive sales even further. “You have to have a first rate stadium," he said.

More broadly, experts on college sports finances question the university's underlying premise that spending on big-time programs will drive either profits or more or better students in Florida Atlantic's direction.

Building expensive stadiums – especially at institutions that are new to the big time and still unproven – is “loony from top to bottom," said Andrew Zimbalist, a professor of economics at Smith College and author of Unpaid Professionals: Commercialism and Conflict in Big-time College Sports.

MOTOR CITY STRUTTIN'

In downtown Detroit Friday night, all roads led to Cobo Center and the 39th annual auto show Charity Preview.

Neither the $400 price tag nor the biting cold was any concern on this gilded evening, where evening gowns in rainbow tones competed with gleaming, candy-colored cars.

Clearly enjoying herself was Aretha Franklin, who said she had just been out with her entourage for dinner at Wolfgang Puck's at the MGM Grand. ("The food was wonderful!")

Are Canada's athletes receiving enough funding?

Who are you to deny these amateur athletes whose talents are in being able to cross country ski incredibly well, or ride a sled down a bobsleigh run faster than everyone else in the world, an income. What makes your dead-end job worth an annual salary while these people who pour 100 times the effort into their chosen sport get nothing? If you're posting on here you obviously have an interest in sport and want to see Canada do well on the international stage. Please leave out comments on how we shouldn't be spending money on athletes when Africa is going hungry, because that is not the issue here. Support our amateur athletes because they aren't the Toronto Maple Leafs, who get paid in the millions and can't perform. Support our athletes like Devon Kershaw who has been supported by his parents as well as having a job and receiving limited government carding to cross country ski as the best male in the country.
