The justices' decision, issued without comment, is the latest setback to legal efforts to force disclosure of details of the warrantless wiretapping that began after the Sept. 11 attacks. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) wanted the court to allow a lawsuit by the group and individuals over the wiretapping program. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the suit, saying the plaintiffs could not prove their communications had been monitored. The government has refused to turn over information about the closely guarded program that could reveal who has been under surveillance. ACLU legal director Steven R. Shapiro has said his group is in a "Catch-22" because the government says the identities of people whose communications have been intercepted is secret.
Conservative commentator William F. Buckley Jr. dies at 82
His prominent family also included his brother James, who became a one-term senator from New York in the 1970s; his socialite wife, Pat, who died in April 2007; and their son, Christopher, the author and satirist ("Thank You for Smoking"). A precocious controversialist, William was but 8 when he wrote to the king of England, demanding payment of the British war debt. After graduating with honors from Yale University in 1950, Buckley married Patricia Alden Austin Taylor, spent a "hedonistic summer" and then excoriated his alma mater for what he regarded as its anti-religious and collectivist leanings in "God and Man at Yale," published in 1951. Buckley spent a year as a low-level agent for the CIA in Mexico, work he later dismissed as boring.
Madeleine is more than a news story, she symbolises the dangers all ...
That trite remark is not intended to illustrate the old myth of dispassionate objectivity. Nor is it an attempt, particularly, to give a human face to a sometimes inhumane trade. It's just a fact, and blindingly obvious. Sorry about that. In this trade we know a little about a lot of things, but there are many things we can never know. How does it really feel to be Tony Blair, or a suicide bomber, or a Saudi princeling? What, if anything, goes on in the mind of a movie star, or a Darfur refugee, or a musical prodigy? We can do youinformation, speculation, andempathy, sometimes. Omniscience is not our game. But parenthood? That's a species marker, more often than not. It's the reason why new fathers and mothers will bore you witless over dinner with the one topic of which they never tire.
1010 WINS Talking Politics with Justin Schrager
In fact, the Huck won more delegates than Romney today. It's also been a big night for Hillary. Obama actually won more states, but with the exception of Illinois, none of his wins came in big states. Clinton took California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Here's a number that doesn't actually mean anything, but it certainly demonstrates how close this election is. ABC News has tallied up all the votes cast in all the democratic races today, and the difference is just about 17 thousand votes. Out of more than ten million. Incredible. (They look close in that picture. They're even closer in the voting booth) 2/5/2008 Have you seen Bill Richardson tonight? Take a look: Remember Horatio Sanz from Saturday Night Live? (the Richardson picture comes from the Albuquerque Journal.
Harper to draw the line on Afghanistan
And--Ignatieff is making speeches about Canada's need to strengthen our backbone internationally (Edmonton speech last week). And--Rae has made sensible noises about Manley's recommendations. Here's what I propose-- Instead of whipping the vote, the LPC should hold a private Caucus meeting and have a vote about Harper's motion. If the majority agrees with Dion, they force an election, and Dion goes for it. If the majority disagrees with Dion, Dion resigns. He states he has lost the confidence of his own party. The LPC allow Iggy to lead the LPC, and they support the mission. However, the Iggy-led LPC forces an election on the budget. We get Iggy as PM by SPRING!!!! I was expecting 2010, but wouldn't Iggy vs Harper in the debates be wonderful? Posted 05/02/08 at 11:18 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
Valentine's Day 'petaways'
Valentine's Day is coming up, but it's not too late plan that romantic getaway you've been dreaming about—and there's no reason why Fido and Fluffy can't come along too. John Clifford of International Travel Management in San Diego, Calif., suggests checking out pet packages offered by some of the country's leading pet-friendly hotel chains if you don't have time to research a romantic hideaway in close proximity to where you live. “Chains such as Kimpton Hotels or W Hotels", specialize in a boutique hotel concept designed to pamper and cater to your every whim, and are renowned for their pet-friendly attitude. Often their pet packages are surprisingly affordable," says Clifford. .
