Pauline Fitzgerald; the force behind famed JFK tea parties

When Henry Cabot Lodge lost his US Senate seat to John F. Kennedy in 1952, he reportedly blamed "those damn tea parties" for the defeat.

The organizer of those famous informal, meet-the-candidate gatherings, Polly Fitzgerald, drew inspiration from Lodge's remark. She later oversaw events for Kennedy's White House bid and for the campaigns of his brothers Edward and Robert, playing a key role in helping to build the vaunted political dynasty.

Pauline (McNamara) Fitzgerald, whom the Kennedys called "Cousin Polly," died of a stroke Feb. 1 at Fox Hill Village in Westwood, where she had lived for two years. She was 88 and previously lived in Needham and Osterville.

"Polly was a dear cousin and a wonderful friend to me and to my parents, my sisters, and my brothers, and will be deeply missed," Senator Edward M.

Michelle Obama, her pride and ‘Beatlemania’: A sign of things to ...

Already, we're getting a taste of what's in store for the next nine months. One side will insist on speaking in French. And the other will listen only in German.

The network was Fox, of course, the host was John Gibson, and the video clip showed Michelle Obama, wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, saying this:

"For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country, because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."

(Some news outlets quote her as saying "really proud," but a video hiccup prevents us from settling the point.)

In any case, the first at Fox to rake over her words on Tuesday was Ralph Reed, the former Georgia GOP chairman:

"The reason why I think this isn't going to go away, unless she apologizes quickly, is because it plays into a stereotype about the left wing of the Democratic Party, that it blames America first, that they don't see the greatness of America, and it really makes me wonder if somebody who is roughly about Barack and Michelle's age, what country she grew up in.

Budweiser, Miller…and Tsingtao?

Crown Imports, the largest beer importer in the U.S., sells more Tsingtao beer every year during Chinese New Year than any other period. This year, it's been pulling out all the stops. Chicago-based Crown (a subsidiary of Constellation Brands (STZ)) has persuaded Costco Wholesale (COST) to carry China's most famous beer in several stores in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest on a trial basis during celebrations of the Year of the Rat, which started on Feb. 7. If Tsingtao sells well, Costco may consider stocking the Chinese import beer year-round. Crown Imports has also signed up celebrity chef Martin Yan to kick off a marketing blitz in a bid to expand Tsingtao outside Chinatown and into downtown U.S.A.

Tsingtao is China's oldest and most famous beer, with a 13% market share at home.
